Little smiles require special care along with a gentle, friendly approach. Dr. McGee is the children’s dentist Monroe families turn to for personalized attention. From those very first checkups and cleanings all the way to orthodontics, Dr. McGee can help protect your child’s smile and put him or her on the path to a lifetime of good oral hygiene!

Healthy Teeth Rely on Preventive Care

Patients of all ages benefit from a checkup and cleaning every six months. We recommend bringing your baby in for his first checkup around the time his first tooth erupts, with regular visits beginning no later than his first birthday. Why so early? During this appointment, your dentist will talk to you about how to properly clean your child’s new teeth, how to avoid tooth decay, and other important concerns for little smiles.

Babies are at a special risk of something called baby bottle tooth decay. You can avoid the condition by limiting the contents of your little one’s bottle to milk, formula, or water. Never put your baby to sleep with a bottle, and clean his gums and teeth with a moist washcloth after each feeding.

This initial visit is also your chance to ask any questions you may have regarding your little one’s oral health -- like how much toothpaste to use when brushing (it depends), teething concerns, as well as recommendations for fluoride.

Dental Sealants and Fluoride Treatments

Children’s teeth are most vulnerable to decay between ages six and 14. As your child gets older, his smile will benefit from two special preventive treatments: dental sealants and fluoride.

Dental sealants are thin coverings that your dentist paints onto the top of the molars. The irregular surface of these back teeth makes them especially vulnerable to tooth decay -- but dental sealants can provide years of protection against cavities.

A quick fluoride treatment applied at the end of your child’s checkup and cleaning also strengthens his tooth enamel against the acids and bacteria that cause decay. You and Dr. McGee can discuss the need for additional fluoride supplements.

Help your child maintain excellent dental hygiene at home by encouraging good brushing and flossing habits. Children should brush for two minutes, at least twice a day, and floss daily. Keep a hygiene chart and track your little one’s habits -- set up a reward for good brushing and flossing each month.
